The local aspiring model struck the winning pose at Willow Grove Park’s casting call When 17-year-old Shakia Anderson’s father passed away in March, she considered abandoning her dreams of becoming a model. However, after hearing of Garage’s “Model Search 2009 — It Could Be You” casting call at Willow Grove Park in April, she decided to try for her dad. “I always knew he wanted me to follow my dreams,” said Anderson in a statement released last week.
Anderson’s father would have been proud, as the lucky Mt. Airy teen was chosen out of 1,000 girls across six states to be featured in the glamorous model 2009 holiday advertising campaign for Garage, a popular clothing retailer for fashion-conscious teenage girls. She will be whisked away on an all-expenses-paid trip to the glitz and glam of the Garage holiday photo shoot in September, and will receive a $1,500 Garage wardrobe featuring their signature trendy celeb-casual looks.
At the Willow Grove Park casting call, Garage judges were impressed by Anderson’s charming and outgoing personality, confidence and comfort in front of the camera, still photographs, and passion for fashion. She was initially selected as one of 10 finalists — one from each U.S. Garage location — and then declared the national model search winner after an in-store vote from peers, Garage shoppers and the Garage Selection Committee.
“Modeling has been my number one goal in life since I was younger,” Anderson said during her casting call interview.
She has walked the runway in a handful of local fashion shows, and recently graduated from Acerella Studio’s Youth model and fashion Program in April. Anderson frequently shops at Willow Grove Park searching for fashion trends to complement her natural stylishness and to help her stand out in a crowd.
Anderson was previously a student at the New Media Technology Charter School in Philadelphia, and plans to complete her senior year at Cheltenham High School in Wyncote. In the future, she hopes to follow in Tyra Banks’ footsteps, by becoming a high fashion model and helping less fortunate people.
